Cypriot folk dance reflects the rich traditions and heritage of the island. Study of traditional dance can present an understanding of social identities in Cyprus and how they are formed, negotiated, and communicated through movement and music. Mostly intact, Cypriot traditional dances are performed in the contemporary society signalling a strong cultural identity and social dynamics that are informed by the local heritage as well as numerous foreign influences that have inhabited the island at various times in history. More than just mere entertainment, music and dance in Cyprus communicate Cypriot identity and belief systems. The participatory nature of music and dance encourages a sense of belonging and emphasises community as a key element of the local culture.
Dance and musical traditions have been kept alive throughout Cypriot history and are still performed at social events and gatherings, festivals, and modern nightclubs. Children learn national dances from an early age from their families, in schools, as well as, private studios and exhibit great pride in performing them. Cypriot folk dance is performed by men, women, and children, and available to all to learn, to physically and emotionally experience their heritage, and connect to their community near and far.
